Upon my return, the Green Chillis caught me up to speed with what’s been going on in the garden. We also feasted on sautéed garlic scapes (the flower shoot formed by hardneck garlic varieties. For eating, it's best to cut them while they're still slender and tender. Removing the scape also encourages the plant to put more energy into forming the garlic head underground - the part that we'll harvest later). Yum!
Recipe: Heavenly Sautéed Garlic Scapes
Nothing says early summer like the fresh taste of these yummies. Serve as a side, in an omelette or pajeon, on top of ice cream (haven't tried this one yet, but if you do, let me know how it is!), or just gobbled straight from the pan (my preference).
Ingredients:
Olive oil
Young, tender garlic scapes
Procedure:
Heat a bit of olive oil in pan over medium-high heat. Saute scapes until tender and bright green (if some of the ends get brown and carmelly, even better). Eat them.

Throughout June, the Green Chillis continued to meet on Friday mornings, setting up soaker hoses, getting plants in the ground, and harvesting lettuce, herbs, and other earlier crops for the food pantry almost every week. It’s been great to give back to the community in this small way.
Most things were growing beautifully by the end of the month, and we planted popcorn, squash, and nasturtiums in an empty median in the library parking lot – all of which germinated nicely.
