Growing popcorn in a parking lot median was a fun use of an unusual planting space, and proved to be quite a conversation piece when patrons came to the library and saw us working out there! Our regular visitors enjoyed watching the crop grow over the summer. Unfortunately, due largely to the lateness of our planting and the heat and drought we experienced, though most of the plants came up, not many ears were pollinated or reached maturity. But we were able to harvest enough to save seed for next year, as well as enjoy a few snacks!
Near the end of October, we harvested some popcorn to see if it was dry enough to pop yet – not quite, we discovered. On Oct. 31, it had dried sufficiently to pop – and it was sure yummy! We harvested the rest of the popcorn the next week.

Through November, we continued to clean up the garden for winter and prepare some things for spring. Just before Thanksgiving, we harvested sage, thyme, parsley, and chives to bring to the food pantry. Then we prepared some scrumptious roasted blue potatoes with garlic, thyme, and onion – all of which we grew! They were delicious.
