A few Green Chillis created and decorated giant bugs to add interest to the library's Young Adult area. We started the project in August, but the garden kept us busy through the summer, and it wasn't until November that we had time to finish! As I write this (February 2014...yeah, I got a bit behind on my updates!), the shelves are still adorned with a giant ant, dragonfly, mosquito, lady bug, and beetle.

We were graced with a bountiful garlic harvest this year, and the Chillis helped trim and clean the bulbs for storage, and we selected some especially nice ones to save for planting in the fall. Later, we had a garlic tasting to compare the three varieties – Persian Star, Georgian Fire, and a variety from Ms. Gail’s CSA. The kids were brave, though their reactions varied, as the garlic was raw and I didn’t have anything for them to eat it with (though one or two professed to prefer raw garlic over cooked…). Bad planning on my part, as raw, unaccompanied garlic can be a bit hard on the tummy (at least it is on mine! I learned my lesson and improved the setup for the next year's sampling). This time, at any rate, the overall preference was for Persian Star and the CSA variety.
