Throughout the summer, we worked hard tending the garden and harvesting (you'll see from the pictures below that we really love our carrots!). This year, each Chilli charge of their own garden plot, and had a say about what was planted there and what was done with the produce. which may have helped create a sense of ownership, but this became complicated when people went out of town. But you never know until you try!
One project this summer was distributing the ton of bulk mushroom compost generously donated by Hoerr Nursery. Delicious food for our growing plants, and another step toward building healthy soil!
We had a lovely planting of flowers, and enjoyed picking colorful bouquets of sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, and more. One less enjoyable task - cleaning pots and flats so they would be ready to store for use next season - was made more fun by doing it with a hose in the sunshine. I think we got just about as wet as the pots!
As the summer got along, harvesting increased, and we began tasks such as saving tomato seeds and garden clean-up.
