In April we did a seed sprouting experiment. Beans were folded into a damp paper towel, then sealed in a plastic bag. We left them for a week or two, then opened them to see what had happened. Most of the beans sprouted roots, stems and leaves. On some of the beans, we removed the cotyledons (which are the seed's food source), and though they sprouted, the embryo remained stunted.
