Thanks to Picket Fence, Chillicothe's very own floral and garden center, we now have plenty of straw to mulch our paths and beds. Mulch keeps down weeds, conserves moisture, and prevents soil compaction -- three extremely valuable and labor-saving characteristics!
This week we got started with some mulching, and we also planted out the first of the annuals we grew from seed: Mammoth Red Rock Cabbage, Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch Kale, and Smooth German Kale -- all from the Brassica family, which also includes broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and more. We greated a miniature hoop house with wire hoops and floating row cover. This should keep any late frosts from nipping the young plants, and hopefully it protects them from the critters who have munched our baby plants in the past!
